What Visiting Anglers to Orlando Need to Know Before They Hit the Water

Planning a quick fishing trip while you’re in Orlando? If you’re visiting from out of state, you’ll want to take note of a recent change from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) that’s catching many anglers by surprise.

As of late 2025, Florida no longer allows short-term non-resident fishing licenses (3-day or 7-day) to be purchased online. These popular short-term licenses are now available only in person — at a county tax collector’s office or a licensed general agent location such as a bait and tackle shop, sporting goods store, or big-box retailer.

For visiting anglers hoping to fish during a family vacation, this new rule means you’ll need to plan a short stop before you hit the water.

What Changed

Until recently, out-of-state visitors could buy 3-day or 7-day Florida fishing licenses instantly through the GoOutdoorsFlorida.com website or the Fish|Hunt FL mobile app. It was fast, convenient, and perfect for travelers spending just a few days in town.

But that’s no longer the case.

According to the updated FWC website, the Non-Resident 3-Day License ($17) and 7-Day License ($30) are now “only available at Tax Collector and General Agent locations.” Meanwhile, the annual non-resident license ($47) can still be purchased online.

While this change hasn’t been accompanied by a major announcement, it’s already active — and it affects anyone visiting from out of state who wants to fish Florida’s freshwater or saltwater without an annual license.

Why This Matters for Orlando Visitors

Most visitors to Central Florida fish only once or twice during their stay — maybe as part of a day trip between theme park visits, or a quick morning on the Butler Chain of Lakes. Losing the ability to buy a short-term license online means:

  • You’ll need to purchase your license in person before your fishing trip.
  • Many guests will discover the change only after arriving, which can cause delays or missed charters.
  • You may need to locate a retailer or tax collector’s office that issues licenses — and check their hours in advance.

It’s a small change, but one that could cause real inconvenience if you don’t know about it ahead of time.

What It Means for Orlando Bass Fishing Charters Guests

If you’re joining us for a day on the water here in Central Florida, here’s what you need to know:

  • Freshwater charters (like ours) require all non-resident anglers aged 16 and older to have a valid Florida freshwater fishing license.
  • Saltwater charters are typically covered under the captain’s for-hire license — meaning guests usually don’t need to purchase one.
  • Because we fish freshwater lakes, you’ll need to buy your own license before your trip.

We always want to make sure you’re legal and ready before launch day, so please take a moment to review the in-person options below.

  • Orange County Tax Collector – 400 E. South Street, Orlando FL 32801
  • Osceola County Tax Collector – 2501 E. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy, Kissimmee FL 34744
  • Seminole County Tax Collector – 845 Primera Blvd, Lake Mary FL 32746

🛒 Sporting Goods & Retail Locations

  • Bass Pro Shops – 5156 International Drive, Orlando FL 32819

💡 Tip: Call ahead to confirm hours — many stores close early on Sundays or holidays.

Your Best Options

If you’ll be fishing in Florida more than once this year, consider purchasing an annual non-resident license for $47 — it’s still available online and valid statewide for both freshwater and saltwater (with proper endorsements).

Otherwise, plan to stop by a license agent or tax collector the day before your charter. The process is quick, and you’ll walk out with your printed license in hand.

💡 Captain’s Tip: Save Time — Buy the Annual License

If you’re visiting from out of state and plan to fish more than once — or even just want to avoid the hassle of tracking down a retailer — skip the short-term license altogether and buy the annual non-resident license online for $47.

By the time you:

  • Locate a retailer or tax collector’s office,
  • Drive there (often 20–30 minutes each way),
  • Wait in line or fill out paperwork…

You’ve already lost a couple hours of your vacation — all to save a few bucks. The annual license is instant, online, and valid statewide for a full 12 months.

Bottom line: less time standing in line, more time fishing.

Quick FAQ

Q: Can I buy a 3-day or 7-day Florida fishing license online?
A: No. Both short-term non-resident licenses must now be purchased in person at a Tax Collector or General Agent location.

Q: Where can I get one near Disney or the Orlando area?
A: Many local tackle shops, Bass Pro Shops, Walmart stores, and county tax collector offices can issue licenses on the spot.

Q: What if I’m fishing with a charter?
A: For saltwater charters, you’re typically covered under the captain’s for-hire license. For freshwater charters — like bass fishing on the Winter Park, Conway and Butler Chains — each non-resident angler age 16+ must have a license.

Q: Can I still buy an annual non-resident license online?
A: Yes. The annual $47 license is still available online at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.
