Early May is one of the best times of year to be on the water here in Central Florida. We’re in that final stretch of spring patterns before the full summer transition, and the bass are still grouped up in big schools with plenty of quality fish mixed in.
It’s not uncommon right now to catch 20–30 fish in a trip when conditions line up. Artificial lures have been producing well, especially speed worms, flukes, and chatterbaits worked along deeper weed lines. Just last week, one of our anglers landed this beautiful 8-pound bass on a speed worm.
If you’re after steady action, wild shiners are still hard to beat. And if you’re chasing bigger fish on artificials, a little patience can really pay off this time of year.
